Taking Flight: How to add Drone photography to your services

Hey there!

I recently started offering drone photography and video services to my clients and couple of photographer friends (and interested recreational flyers) have asked me a few questions about the certification process and when do you need it, so here is some information to help you understand why and how you can get certified.

First and foremost, it's important to remember that flying a drone commercially requires certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Meaning, if you are going to charge for your services using a drone, you will need a license.

I know that getting certified may sound daunting, but don't worry! It's a pretty straightforward process involving passing a knowledge test and demonstrating your understanding of the rules and regulations surrounding commercial drone use. And trust me, it's definitely worth it!

Getting the Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA ensures that you're in compliance with all the necessary regulations for safety around airspaces, towers, restricted zones, flying over people, and more.

To get my license, I did a short course at Drone Launch Academy where they slowly walk you through everything you need to know for the test and safe flying. They offer video courses, practice tests, flash cards to help study, and a podcast (perfect for studying while driving!) that guide you through everything you need to know. It's super user friendly and they guarantee you'll pass the test. I was a little nervous about it but I passed on my first try and got my license in the mail about 8 weeks later!

It’s super important to understand that the certification is to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Flying a drone commercially comes with a certain level of risk, and it's important to understand how to mitigate those risks and what to do when accidents happen. By getting certified, you'll better understand safe flying practices, emergency procedures, and other factors that will impact the safety of your flight.

Flying a drone for photography purposes is an incredibly fun and exciting hobby that has become more accessible than ever before. Thanks to advances in technology, drones have become smaller, more affordable, and more user-friendly, making them the perfect tool for capturing stunning aerial images and videos.

Getting certified before offering drone services is a smart move that will benefit both you and your clients. It ensures legal compliance, safety, and professionalism, which are crucial for a successful career.

So, what are you waiting for? Let's get certified and take to shooting in the skies!
