NYFW Through My Lens: Fashion, Fun, and the Ultimate Photography Hustle
Attending New York Fashion Week (NYFW) as an editorial photographer was an experience that both challenged and inspired me in ways I didn’t expect. From the moment I arrived, I knew this would be no ordinary event. As a photographer, preparation is key, and getting there early gave me the time I needed to scope out the best angles, lighting, and unique moments to capture. The early mornings and hustle paid off, especially when I made connections with other photographers and fashion industry professionals who quickly became friends and collaborators.
What really made my experience special was the Made in Mexico section. As a proud Latina, photographing this show was a deeply emotional moment for me. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride to see so many talented Mexican designers showcasing their incredible work on such a prestigious stage. As I clicked the shutter, I felt like I was not just capturing fashion, but also the story of my heritage unfolding in front of me. It was an honor to contribute to telling that story through my lens.
When it comes to shooting fashion photography, having the right gear is crucial. My camera and lenses were ready to go, but it wasn’t just about the tech—it was about being in the moment and staying focused. Proper rest was essential too. As exhilarating as the shows are, they’re also exhausting, and getting enough sleep made sure I had the energy to stay sharp all day. I’ll admit, the nights before the shows, I found myself battling jetlag, but my excitement always kept me going.
One of the most unforgettable moments came just before one of the shows when I had been guarding my prime spot for hours—ready to snap the perfect shot. But, as often happens in the chaotic world of fashion events, the unexpected hit. Staff came over and told me I had to move because they had oversold tickets and had to make room for others. After a few minutes of disbelief, I had to quickly adjust my strategy and find another spot. It was a reminder that no matter how much you plan or prepare, you always have to be ready for the unexpected in this industry. Thankfully, it was worth the move when I found a new angle that gave me an even better view, and I was able to capture some of the most incredible moments of the show.
Most importantly, I had fun. The energy at NYFW is infectious, and it was easy to get swept up in the excitement of the runway, the street style, and the creative atmosphere. I couldn't have asked for a better backdrop to work in. As an editorial photographer, I was constantly inspired by the mix of artistry, fashion, and culture in the air. It was an unforgettable experience that reminded me why I love what I do.
A big shoutout to my amazing friend and assistant, Melissa, who was a total champ throughout it all. From helping with food and motivation to keeping my gear safe and reminding me how fun this journey is, Melissa was the perfect support system. She helped me remember why I do this in the first place, and for that, I’m so grateful.
I can’t wait for next time, I’ll make sure to bring snacks and a backup plan for when the unexpected hits. 😊
